Residency open to the finest classical instrumentalists at the beginning of their career

To celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2023, the Académie is launching a career development programme for solo instrumentalists wishing to perfect their skills in the art of chamber music repertoire.

Ten musicians at the beginning of their career, selected for their artistic quality but also for their motivation to play in an ensemble, are brought together around the Russian solo pianist and chamber musician, Kirill Gerstein, whose instrumental practice will be revealed through a portrait dedicated to him as part of the Festival d'Aix concert series. Under his direction, the participants will develop their skills in performing a wide repertoire of chamber music ranging from classical to contemporary, in varying numbers. The daily activity of master classes and rehearsals will lead them to perform in several concerts, including a closing concert on 5 July 2023. This concert is the first concert of the Festival concert series, and the stage is shared with the German horn player Stefan Dohr, the American violinist Noah Bendix-Balgley, and Kirill Gerstein himself.

Throughout their stay in Aix, the instrumentalists are asked to work collectively while reflecting on the concert experience as a place for sharing emotions and communion with the audience. In this respect, they are invited to devise short concert programmes for audiences not used to classical concert halls. These programmes will lead to musical encounters conceived in close collaboration with the Festival d'Aix Passerelles department. A body and movement coaching provided by actors and mime artists Jos Houben and Emily Wilson, is completing this work.
