CALL FOR SCORES FOR STRING QUARTETS
Application shortlisting results: February 2020
Call for scores open to any composer under 32 years old
As part of the Chamber music residency—a program that welcomes the most promising string quartets every year, under the supervision of internationally renowned artists—the Académie du Festival d’Aix is launching, for the first time, a call for scores by young composers. This initiative reinforces the Académie's commitment to unite composers and performers, while defending the creation and the enrichment of the chamber music repertoire.
The composers whose works are selected will be invited to take part in the second week of the residency. Each work will be performed by one of the participating string quartets during the residency's closing concerts, which will also feature pieces by Kaija Saariaho.
During the residency, the composers will join performers in work sessions centered around their scores, sometimes in the presence of the team of supervisors. They will also meet and be able to discuss directly with the composer KAIJA SAARIAHO, and will benefit from the expertise of the violist GARTH KNOX (a former member of the Arditti Quartet and of the Ensemble Intercontemporain) during rehearsals. In addition, the composers will have the opportunity to present their works as part of a public masterclass at the Hôtel Maynier d’Oppède. Lastly, they will participate in outreach programs under the supervision of MARK WITHERS, and will receive career advice during sessions led by CHRISTIANE LOUIS, head of professional resources at the Philharmonie de Paris.
